Sexual & Reproductive Health Rights

Introduction

Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) is a cross-cutting theme in Gender Links gender justice, governance and media programmes.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) program was launched to empower individuals with knowledge about healthcare and their rights, enabling them to make informed decisions and promote overall well-being. The initiative specifically aimed to tackle key challenges related to reproductive health, (fertility, contraception, maternal health) gender-based violence (GBV), and sexual education (sexually transmitted infections, safe and healthy sexuality) in Mauritius and Rodrigues.
Limited access to SRHR services remains a critical issue in the Republic of Mauritius which affects young people, women, and economically disadvantaged individuals. This lack of access has led to significant public health consequences such as teenage pregnancies, and the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Cultural taboos, inadequate sexual education, and economic hardships exacerbate these challenges, making comprehensive intervention necessary.
In Mauritius, GL developed and carried out a range of projects focused on gender justice and the promotion of SRHR.
Gender Links made significant progress in advancing SRHR education in Mauritius and Rodrigues. We developed a SRHR toolkit along with a dedicated bilingual booklet (kreol and english). These resources were officially launched in both regions, providing essential guidance for educators, community leaders, and young people.

We also conducted SRHR training for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Faith-Based Organisation (FBOs) and initiated engagement with parents to bridge the generational gaps in discussions on sexual health. Additionally, we launched a campaign addressing violence against children, which gained strong support, including endorsement from Junior Ministers, reinforcing the commitment to child protection and well-being.

We have facilitated sessions in schools and other organisations with an estimated number of 840 Adolescents in Mauritius and more than 200 children in afterschool clubs in Mauritius; more than 800 children in Rodrigues and around 300 adolescents in 2025.
The SRHR program in Mauritius and Rodrigues represents a significant step towards improving reproductive health education, reducing stigma, and empowering communities. By training NGOs, educators, and individuals, the initiative ensures that accurate information reaches wider audiences.
Recently, we have been collaborating with Scouts in St Pierre to conduct SRHR sessions.

Specific focus has been placed on adolescents sexual and reproductive rights, addressing issues such as teenage pregnancy and access to contraception. Other topics addressed are IST, HIV and AIDS prevention, safe abortion, menstrual health and maternal health.
Gender Links has been solicited for more training with departmental heads and officers from various commissions on the topic of Gender and SRHR.
By fostering collaboration, continuous monitoring, and active community involvement, the project envisions a future where sexual and reproductive health is widely understood, openly discussed, and accessible to all. The creation of Youth Hubs will foster civic engagement by providing opportunities for young people to lead initiatives and drive social change.

The SRHR work is primarily financed by the Commonwealth Foundation and the Direct Aid Programme.
