Introduction

Programme introduction image
In September 2017, Gender Links Mauritius founded the Safe Haven Halfway Home (SHHH).
SHHH provides a safe space for women survivors of gender-based violence (physical, emotional, sexual, and or economic abuse) and homeless women aged 18 and above, and for their children.
At SHHH, beneficiaries are given tools through training, one-to-one sessions, and group sessions to empower them on a personal, social, and professional level. On a personal level, residents are provided with counselling and psychological support, self-esteem, and personal development guidance. On a social level, the interpersonal and communication skills of residents are developed. Tailor-made in-house programmes to ensure that residents are empowered to develop employability skills.

WHAT WE DO
Counselling and psychological support
Residents are provided with counselling and psychological support.
The Shelter Manager and the House Coordinator attend the medical sessions with the resident, and a follow up is made.
Self Esteem, personal development and hygiene
Residents take part in in-house training that enhance their self-esteem, empower them and teach them about personal hygiene
Literacy & Numeracy
It has also been noted that the residents of SHHH have a very poor academic background due to their school dropout at a very early age. They are given support to restart/ renew their academic ventures. The children are closely monitored in terms of their academic and extra-curricular performance. Group activities with children are done regularly ensuring the well-being of our kids
Economic Empowerment
Residents are encouraged to join the labor market in order to be financially independent. They learn how to write their CVs and motivation letters and are linked with job opportunities.
The shelter has a capacity of 35 individuals at any one time. Since 2017, 350+ survivors have lived in the shelter for a duration of one year maximum.
