Gender Links

Overview

Through the Direct Aid Programme, Gender Links Mauritius strengthened sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and community engagement in both Mauritius and Rodrigues. The work focused on improving access to accurate information, promoting bodily autonomy, addressing stigma, and supporting safer conversations with young people, women, community leaders and service providers.

What the programme achieved

The Direct Aid Programme enabled Gender Links Mauritius to create safe and practical spaces for SRHR dialogue in Mauritius and Rodrigues. Participants engaged on reproductive health, bodily autonomy, consent, stigma, discrimination and protection from violence. The work helped normalise conversations that are often treated as sensitive, especially for young people and women in community settings.

In Rodrigues, the programme supported decentralised outreach by bringing SRHR information closer to communities that may face additional barriers linked to geography, access to services and limited specialist support. In Mauritius, the work reinforced ongoing community education and rights-based advocacy led by Gender Links Mauritius.

Forward Priorities

Going forward, the work should deepen SRHR education in both islands, strengthen referral pathways, expand youth-friendly and inclusive tools, and support community champions who can continue conversations on health, rights, equality and protection from violence.
