What the Programme Has Achieved So Far

The programme’s launch phase established a strong foundation for implementation across the four territories. Key achievements include:

· Alignment of partners and country teams around a shared vision, objectives and implementation approach.

· Validation of the project methodology, including training, coaching and mentoring components.

· Establishment of a regional governance, coordination and reporting framework.

· Development of a transparent and inclusive process for selecting participating CSOs.

· Strengthened engagement with national stakeholders and institutions to ensure local ownership and sustainability.

· Launch of a regional roadmap that will guide programme implementation through 2029.

Forward Priorities

Over the coming months, the programme will focus on:

· Finalising the selection of participating CSOs across Mauritius, Rodrigues, Madagascar and the Comoros.

· Launching the first phase of training, mentoring and organisational development activities.

· Establishing regional monitoring, evaluation and knowledge-sharing systems.

· Collecting baseline data on childcare needs and unpaid care work to inform advocacy and policy engagement.

· Supporting CSOs to design and implement community initiatives and advocacy actions that advance women’s rights and childcare reform.

· Strengthening partnerships with government institutions, community leaders and development partners to promote sustainable, long-term change.

Strengthening Civil Society Organisations

The programme supports women’s and feminist CSOs through capacity-building, training, mentoring and coaching. These interventions focus on improving organisational governance, leadership, advocacy, project management, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic communications.

Advancing Women’s Rights and Gender Equality

The programme works with local organisations to promote women’s rights, strengthen women’s leadership, and support initiatives that challenge gender inequalities and discriminatory social norms.

Recognising and Addressing Unpaid Care Work

A core priority is increasing awareness of the disproportionate burden of unpaid care and domestic work carried by women. The programme will generate evidence and strengthen advocacy efforts to promote the recognition, reduction and redistribution of care responsibilities.

Promoting Equitable Childcare Systems

The initiative supports the development of accessible, affordable and quality childcare solutions that enable women to participate more fully in education, employment, entrepreneurship and public life.

Building Regional Knowledge and Advocacy

Through data collection, community consultations and regional learning exchanges, the programme will strengthen evidence-based advocacy and foster collaboration among organisations across the Indian Ocean region.
