Gender Links

Overview

The programme aimed to strengthen democratic governance and promote gender equality in Mauritius by increasing the participation and influence of women and youth in political and civic decision-making.

Implemented by Gender Links, the project addressed persistent structural and social barriers that limit women’s political representation. It combined research, advocacy, capacity building,

and public awareness initiatives to create opportunities for more inclusive participation in democratic processes.

Through evidence-based approaches and stakeholder engagement, the programme fostered dialogue, raised awareness, and supported the creation of an enabling environment for women’s leadership and youth engagement in governance.

Research and Evidence-Based Advocacy

The programme produced and disseminated research on women and youth participation in politics in Mauritius. This provided critical insights into barriers and opportunities, supporting informed policy dialogue and advocacy.

Advocacy and Public Campaigns

Campaigns such as “50-50” and “Plis Ki Enn Kota” promoted gender parity and raised awareness on the importance of inclusive political representation.

Capacity Building and Training

Workshops and training sessions were delivered to women, youth, political actors, and local authorities, focusing on leadership, political participation, and gender mainstreaming.

Media Engagement and Awareness

Media literacy workshops strengthened participants’ ability to critically engage with information and understand the role of media in shaping public discourse on democracy and gender equality.

Empowerment of Survivors of Gender-Based Violence

The project supported survivors through storytelling initiatives and empowerment activities, amplifying their voices and contributing to advocacy on women’s rights.

What the Programme Achieved

• Reached over 45,000 people through awareness campaigns and digital outreach.

• Supported over 400 women and youth through economic empowerment workshops across Mauritius and Rodrigues.

• Engaged over 260 participants in political leadership and participation initiatives.

• Trained local councils and gender focal persons in gender mainstreaming across 12 councils.

• Strengthened collaboration with civil society, political parties, media, and government institutions.

The programme successfully created platforms for dialogue and strengthened awareness of gender equality and democratic participation. It also enhanced stakeholders’ capacity to engage

in governance processes and contributed to a stronger evidence base for advocacy.
